MT Special: Will history repeat itself?

Politics and cinema have always influenced each other in this country for decades . Recently fresh trailor of Marathi film ‘ Baghtos Kay Mujra Kar!’ was released & film is set to hit box office by 3 rd February.

Release of this movie at a time when Maharashtra is scheduled to undergo Zilla Parishad and Municipal Corporation elections, with the ongoing turmoil between BJP and Shivsena, certainly indicates that they will not contest elections together.

Portraying himself as ‘ruling opposition party’,Uddhav has made repeated vocal attacks on Modi and has extended open support to the fishermen opposing Shivaji memorial & farmers opposing CM’s dream project of Samruddhi corridor between Mumbai & Nagpur.

Uddhav, during bhoomipujan of Shivaji memorial at BKC Mumbai rally, in presence of PM Modi has categorically requested his intervention to handover forts of Maharashtra from Archeological Survey of India (central government) to Shivsena for maintenance & glorification of Shivaji Maharaj’s history .

‘Bhagtos Kay Mujra Kar,’ film throws spotlight on how most important symbol of Hindavi Swaraj, the forts of Shivaji Maharaj, are long forgotten and lay in ruins tinted with tobacco laden spit, garbage, empty beer bottles and lovers declaring their love for each other on the same walls where the brave Mawlas spilled their blood for Swarajya. Character in the film, ‘Nana’, is an ardent follower of Shivaji Maharaj and wants to restore the decaying fort for the people of Maharashtra to remember the legacy in all its glory.

‘Mi Shivaji Raje Bhosale Boltoy’ based on story of common Marathi Manoos of Cosmopolitan Mumbai portrayed in film as Dinkar Maruti Bhonsle represents the suppressed feelings of thousands of ‘Marathis’ who feel that they have lost & feel guilty of being deprived of oppportunities in Business, politics & education as Maharashtrians, with a strong message that ‘Mumbai is in Maharashtra but there is no Maharashtra left in Mumbai’ .

Movie’s release time was perfectly in concurrence with the formation of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena which was based on Hindutva and Bhumiputra ideologies to connect with the feelings of Marathi manoos. MNS grabbed attention of Marathi manoos for it’s agitation against North Indians and denunciation of MLA Abu Azmi, right from initial oppose to a few film scenes & later on giving free tickets / sponsoring shows and parties and was successful in lifting up the lost Marathi spirit & successfully converted it into the then local & state elections.

Films have always played influential role in mind of Indians & film stars like NTR, Rajnikant and Jayalalitha have dominated political circles by their charisma.

BJP has contested and won the last assembly elections through it’s slogan ‘Chhatrapati cha ashirwad ………’ and now keeping an eye on all upcoming elections in Maharashtra has put all it’s strength to make Shivaji Memorial Bhoomipoojan a grand event.

Political observers predict that new film will benefit Shivsena , which was the only party vocal about the conditions of Shivaji’s forts in Maharashtra, and might spell the same magic on electoral results for Shiv Sena which MNS once enjoyed through success of ‘me shivaji Raje Bhonsale boltoy’.

Film’s success will answer whether Maharashtra wants to glorify The Great Maratha Warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s history in the form of American inspired Shivaji memorial or by way of restoration of the past glory of forts of Hindavi Swaraj.
