Pune: Two men were arrested for manhandling two traffic police officials, one of them a woman, and a warden. The two were ferrying 21 passengers in a tempo. The incident happened around 7.30pm at Dange Chowk in Thergaon.
Constables Sudhir Rasal and N M Hake, and warden B J Sathe from the Hinjewadi traffic division were directing traffic at the chowk when they spotted a tempo with passengers parked by the side of the road.
As the parked vehicle was creating traffic congestion, the cops asked the driver to leave the spot. However, the driver refused and entered into a heated argument.
As per senior inspector Shridhar Jadhav, in-charge of the Wakad police station, driver Santosh Sathe (38) and his accomplice Krishna Kanse (23), from Maval, verbally abused the police officials and warden. After the dispute grew heated, the duo manhandled the officials.
The tempo was carrying people to a function invol ving NCP leader Ajit Pawar in Chinchwad.
The tempo, which is meant to transport goods, was so full of people that a few were even seated on the roof, the officials said. Acting on a complaint filed by Rasal, Sathe and Kanse were arrested on Sunday.
Four other traffic officials were also manhandled in this area in the past.
