State to form housing authority with judicial powers

Mumbai: A housing authority with judicial powers, the state government has proposed to form the authority which will cover residential buildings that are administered by cooperative societies.

As per sources, the proposed authority should govern redevelopment of residential buildings which have become a major issue in Maharashtra.

With multiple builders approaching housing societies with proposals for redevelopment of buildings, residents are often split resulting in litigation that delays projects. As per the proposed laws, a three-fourth majority by all members at an Annual General Meeting would be sufficient to push the project.

However, consumer rights activists have already criticised some of the measures on the grounds that they could be misused by vested interests.

Several groups have written to the state government saying the proposed authority should not infringe on the rights of aggrieved flat owners to approach courts for relief.
