The Shiv Sena spokesman Sanjay Raut again spewed his venom against the BJP and its supporters. This time on the issue of 19-year-old Dalit woman, who was allegedly gang-raped by four men in western Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras and died at hospital on Tuesday. The Dalit woman was allegedly raped by four men on September 14 and referred to the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi on Monday in an extremely critical condition with spinal injuries, paralysis and cuts in her tongue. She could not survive the night and died at 3 am that day.
People from different walks of life are demanding justice for the victim, conveying their anger and anguish over the gruesome gang rape and murder. However, the way Raut linked it with the Bollywood actress, Kangana Raut, without naming her, surprised many.
Political observers here feel that Raut is not leaving any stone unturned in criticising the BJP and its supporters after his party had ditched the saffron party and made an alliance with the NCP and Congress to form an alternative government in Maharashtra.
Raut asked why the RPI leader, Ramdas Athawale, is not making any statement in this regard or visiting the victim’s home at Hathras while the RPI minister, who is also a union minister, went to the residence of the Hindi film actress in Mumbai to extend his support, an obvious reference to Kanagana, whose office at Bandra was demolished by the BMC.
Raut said, “After the Nirbhaya case, a new law had to be enacted. The ministers at the Centre today were our allies. Nirbhaya had taken to the streets to seek justice. But now in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, when such incidents of rape and murder take place, everyone stays calm. The government has nothing to do with such incidents. But the police system, the political system, wants to investigate and bring the criminals to justice… It simply came to our notice then. Currently, such incidents are on the rise in the country. The fear of the law seems to be fading. Today, women leaders at the Centre need to play the same role as they did during Nirbhaya.”
It’s good that Raut raised the issue of the gang-rape of the dalit woman in UP, along with other sensible people. Such incident should be vehemently condemned and the culprits should be given maximum punishment. But why Raut kept mum when a minor girl was brutally subjected to gang rape by four youths in north Nagpur, his own state of Maharashtra. Though the incident happened about a month and half ago, it came to light on Tuesday. The victim lodged a complaint with cops on Tuesday. Nagpur cops have arrested four accused, including one neighbour of the victim girl.
The girl, in severe trauma, returned home and kept mum. However, sensing something amiss when her mother took her in confidence, the tormented girl narrated her ordeal to her parents. Following which they approached Jaripatka police and lodged a complaint that led to the arrest of four rapists.
Hope, Raut will also look after sensible issues of his own state and comments and make suggestions, accordingly. He should not apply a double standard in judgments.
