Kolhapur: A statue of late legendary cartoonist RK Laxman’s Common Man was installed on Wednesday at SP Office Chowk. The statue will be formally inaugurated on Thursday.
The statue was installed by the NGO, Kolhapur Street Beautification Project (KSBP) to thank the policemen. The inspiration for this project came from a similar statue installed in Pune a few years ago at Symbiosis International University. Most of the sculptors and designers of the statue are from the city.
The NGO set up by a few activists from the city, has undertaken work to beautify the city by planting trees or by setting up of traffic islands. Sujay Pitre, convener of the KSBP, said that for the past few years the city has witnessed intense agitations and police have played a major role in maintaining the law and order.
The idea behind the statue is to develop a healthy relationship between police and common people. We are sure that the sculpture will help common man feel secure in dealing with the police. We have harnessed local talent for designing the statue.
The NGO studied the statue installed at Symbiosis and used materials that will sustain it for a longer time and avoid deterioration due to rain or scorching heat.
Common Man is a creation of Laxman who died on January 26, 2015 in Pune. The character represented feelings of common people while analysing the events occurring in its surroundings. Activists claim that the statue of Common Man in Kolhapur will be third in the state. Earlier, similar statues were installed in Pune and Mumbai.
