The controversial Maharashtra forest minister Sanjay Rathod, who was dragged into the TikTok star Pooja Chavan suicide case, may likely to step down as Minister as the chief minister Uddhav Thackeray was cornered by Opposition on the issue.
The deceased Chavan (22) – hailed from Beed district of Marathwada and had just come to Pune to attend an English-speaking course. She was living along with two youth, said to be her brother and his friend.
On February 8, she allegedly committed suicide by jumping from a building at Wanawadi area of the city, sparking to a controversy. The former Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadavnis demanded that the death of Pooja Chavan should be investigated as the alleged phone conversation between Pooja and the minister Sanjay Rathod became viral. Fadnavis has sent a letter along with the purported audio clips to the Director-General of Police Hemant Nagrale seeking a detailed investigation
“The truth behind this should be revealed. This case should not be suppressed. The clip which has come out of the evidence should be investigated and the police themselves should file a complaint and investigate,” said Fadnavis.
It was said that Pooja was 22 and pregnant with the illegitimate child of this Minister and hence she took the extreme step. The issue has also heated up across the state as ten to twelve clips of him allegedly talking to Pooja have gone viral.
The police registered a case of accidental death. The Pune denied any foul play in the matter. They said that they have not found anything objectionable in the audio clip and that the family members of Pooja too have not made complaint against anyone. In such a situation, they added, what could they do on their own? However, in the audio clip, a man named Arun can be heard seeking information about the incident from another person. He also talks about Pooja’s mobile and laptop. The conversation is in Banjara language. The voice of the person who is talking to Arun is being claimed to be similar to that of the Maharashtra minister, Rathod, who also belongs to Banjara community. Reacting on the issue, the chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday said that the police would inquire the matter and the guilty would be punished.
