Pune: A 52-year-old farmer Dadasaheb Mahadik, was crushed under the wheels of a petrol tanker after he fell off an overcrowded pick-up van near Shevalwadi octroi post on the Pune-Solapur highway.
The Hadapsar police said Mahadik, a resident of Sindavane village in Haveli taluka, was going to a market at Shevalwadi to sell vegetables. Police have booked the drivers of the tanker and the pick-up van for negligent driving.
The tanker driver, Lahu Parule (31) from Hadapsar, told police that the accident occurred around 2 pm. Assistant inspector of Hadapsar police station K S Londhe said that Parule told them that about six passengers, including Mahadik, were standing on the footrest of the van.
He said when the van reached near the octroi post, Mahadik lost his grip and fell on the road. Parule’s tanker was just behind the van. Mahadik came under the rear wheels of the tanker and was killed on the spot, Londhe said.
He said it was not possible for the tanker driver to turn left as there were two motorcycles. Parule could not apply brakes suddenly as the tanker was filled with petrol, Londhe informed. Parule told the police that the van driver fled the spot immediately.
