Ex-CM Nilangekar infected with COVID-19

Mumbai : After the death of former state election commissioner, Neela Satyanarayan because of COVID-19 the former chief minister and senior Congress leader from Maharashtra Shivajirao Patil Nilangekar, 91, has tested positive for the virus on Thursday. Nilangekar, who was CM for a brief stint in 1985-1986, has been admitted to a private hospital in Pune.

Earlier, Neela Satyanarayan died at a hospital here on Thursday morning, hospital authorities said. She was 72. The 1972-batch IAS officer was the state’s first woman election commissioner. She died at Seven Hills Hospital in suburban Andheri around 4 am, the medical facility’s dean Dr Balkrishna Adsul said. Her husband and son are also undergoing treatment for COVID-19 at the hospital, he said.

Maharashtra has turned into a COVID-19 hotspot after a huge spike in the number of cases. As per the statement by Kalyan-Dombivli Corporation, the area has noticed new emerging hotspots with more COVID cases. Around 400 COVID cases were registered by the Corporation in last 24 hours.

According to the reports, the cities of Kalyan and Dombivli have seen the rapid spread of COVID-19 since June. In the wake of the alarming Situation caused due to COVID-19 infection, the Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has extended the lockdown in the entire areas of the two cities till July 19, but the imposition of lockdown is nowhere followed and vehicular movement is seen as usual in the cities.

Meanwhile, the state government partially lifted its freeze on development funds to help stimulate economic growth. In an order, the Uddhav Thackeray government said it would allow all departments to sanction new development works permissible under the Local Area Development fund allocated to legislators.

In another development, at least 40 doctors who had come to Mumbai from Kerala on the request of the Maharashtra government are returning to their state as the civic body, BMC has not paid their salaries. Fifteen have already left, and 25 are leaving today. The doctors from Kerala had been tasked with setting up a Covid-19 hospital in the city.
