Ex-CM Fadnavis meets Sanjay Raut amid rumours that old allies may come together again

Amid intensification of attacks against the BJP on several issues, the Shiv Sena spokesman and party strategist, Sanjay Raut met the former chief minister and leader of the Opposition Devendra Fadnavis at Mumbai on Saturday.

Political pundits surprised over the meeting of both the leaders as Raut on Saturday questioned the Narendra Modi government for announcing the Bihar elections and asked that whether COVID-19 has ended? Raut sought to know how elections would be conducted in Bihar amid the coronavirus pandemic. “How will elections be held in such an atmosphere? The country must know. How will the election campaign and rallies be held? Voting cannot be online. You have to stand in a queue,” the Rajya Sabha member said.

And his meeting with opposition leader and senior BJP leader Fadnavis has fuelled rumours that both the parties may again come together to form a government. It was said that both the leaders met at Grand Hyatt hotel, Santacruz in Mumbai this afternoon and stayed there for over two hours. This meeting has given sufficient indication that the old allies may again come together and form a non-Congress and non-NCP government in the state.

The state was plunged into a political crisis after the Sena broke its three-decade-long ties with the BJP after its partner refused to accede to its demand of sharing the chief minister’s post after the state elections, held in October last year. The BJP and Sena, which fought the October 21 assembly polls in alliance, had secured a comfortable majority by winning 105 and 56 seats, respectively, in the 288-member assembly. The Congress and the NCP, pre-poll allies, won 44 and 54 seats, respectively. The Sena then began talks with the Congress-NCP alliance and formed an alternative government.

Saturday meeting of both the leaders, Fadnavis and Raut rattled the Congress and NCP camps as they are sharing power even they didn’t get the mandate from the people in the elections. It should be mentioned here that Raut was instrument for the non-BJP government in the state.
