Trouble appears to be brewing against in the Republic TV anchor and noted journalist, Arnab Goswami as the Congress on Wednesday demanded the arrest of Goswami for allegedly spreading communal hatred and defaming the party chief Sonia Gandhi on a live television show.
Goswami, on Tuesday, had reportedly targetted the Congress chief Sonia Gandhi over her silence on the lynching of two sadhus in Maharashtra’s Palghar district. In a horrifying incident, three people, including two sadhus, were mercilessly lynched to death at Gadchinchale village of Palghar near Mumbai. The trio, including a 70-year-old man, was attacked on Thursday night in front of police personnel when they were on their way to Surat to attend a funeral.
The incident was strongly condemned by all sections of people and political parties. However, neither the Congress chief nor any senior party functionary came forward to condemn the incident. In a Live debate in Republic-Bharat, the noted TV anchor Goswami questioned these Congress leaders and particularly the party chief Sonia Gandhi for her silence on the issue as the party and its leaders express their views in almost all such issues.
Several leaders of the grand old party came down heavily on Goswami for “dragging Sonia Gandhi’s name in the debate.” Satej Patil, the Maharashtra minister of state for Home, in Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha-Vikas -Aghadi where the Congress is an alliance partner, said Goswami is also trying to incite communal hatred and trying to dismantle communal harmony in the society. “Arnab Goswami has defamed the Congress President Sonia Gandhi and is also trying to incite communal hatred among people of the state,” he said.
In the controversial TV debate, Arnob in his own style asked why the Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, who came from Italy, hasn’t spoken a word against the lynching of saints in Palghar. “I think deep inside, she is very happy that Hindu saints were killed on the road in Maharashtra where the Congress is the alliance partner in the government,” Goswami told the Congress spokesperson on his show and claimed, “She (Sonia) will send the report to Italy that she’s ‘getting Hindu saints killed’ after forming the government in Maharashtra. She will get a lot of appreciation from Italy for this.”
The Congress national spokesman, Randeep Surjewala said that it is deeply disgraceful that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP eulogize this brand of TV anchors. In a tweet, Surjewala also posted an old video of Sonia Gandhi’s speech where she can be heard saying that she came to India as the daughter-in-law of Indira Gandhi and she has spent 48 years of her life in India. “Let the PM Modi remember that Sonia Gandhi has spent over 50 years of life in India, serving the country and being a witness to sacrifice of her mother-in-law and the husband,” he added.
The former Lok Sabha member and senior Congress leader, Sanjay Nirupam demanded that Arnab Goswami must be arrested for his communal campaign against the Congress President Sonia Gandhi. “The Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh must initiate action against him,” he insisted and said that the TV anchor has disgraced Indian journalism and said that even broadcasters association should issue condemnation against him.
The Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot even described Arnab as insane and said that he has crossed all limits. “He (Goswami) should be ashamed of himself. I must ask the Editors guild – isn’t this all-time low for journalism?” he said and asked the Republic TV owner to sack Arnab.
However, several people also stood behind Arnab and his reporting. “Why people are targeting Arnab? This Sonia and his son Rahul are hypocrite of biggest order. When a Muslim was lynched Rahul went to his home now when the same thing happened to Hindu saints, they are Silent,” asked one Deepak by tweeting.
The national BJP spokesman, Sambit Patra said that he will be with Arnab and said that the TV anchor should continue to expose the Congress for its such agenda.
Meanwhile, the state Minister Nitin Raut lodged a police compliant with Nagpur police on Wednesday against Goswami and late night FIR was filed against him.
