Mumbai: The COVID-19 infection claimed yet another life of a policeman in the state capital, Mumbai on Thursday, taking the total number of policemen dying because of the deadly virus across the state to 13. Around 1,400 cops in the state were infected with novel Coronavirus so far.

The state health department sources said that a policeman posted in Mumbai Vikroli died due to the coronavirus infection. As of now, the number of Maharashtra Police personnel infected with the infection is around 1400 and half of them are in Mumbai city alone.
Sources said that a large number of policemen have also been put in self-quarantine, which has left a staggering shortage of personnel in the police department. To match the present requirements of police personnel, the Maharashtra government has sought Centre’s help and asked to send around 2000 additional policemen from the Central Armed Police Forces to provide some respite to its own fatigued officers. Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit state by the deadly contagion.

The Health Ministry, coronavirus cases have risen to 41,642 in Maharashtra, followed by Tamil Nadu and Gujarat with below 15,000 cases. On Thursday, 2,345 new cases were found in the state while 64 persons died of COVID-19 in last 24 hours in Maharashtra.
In Mumbai, total cases of COVID-19 reached to 25,500. Among the new cases, 47 new coronavirus positive patients were found in Mumbai’s Dharavi itself, taking the total number of patients in the area to 1,425. However, no deaths were reported on Thursday at Dharavi.
