Aurangabad: Famous Ajanta and Ellora of Maharashtra are among the 17 “iconic sites”, announced by the Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, which will be transformed into world-class destinations to boost the tourism sector, in coming days.
A senior tourism department official here informed that a master plan was being prepared to develop all the 17 sites. The Ajanta and Ellora caves were chosen based on the sheer number of tourists that visit them and their status on the international tourism map.
It was said that both the Union and the state governments would work on the project with the help of Archaeological Survey of India. A detailed master plan is currently being developed by a private agency, entailing a specific plan for each site.
A seizable tourists visit at the sites of Ajanta and Ellora every year from Buddhist countries, particularly from Japan, Thailand and other far-eastern countries.
