Mumbai : After the Congress, now its principal ally in the Maha-Vikas Aghadi, the Shiv Sena, also targeted the Bollywood actors Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar for not reacting on petrol and diesel price hikes and their selective activism.
The former union minister and senior Shiv Sena leader Arvind Sawant on Friday slammed Bollywood celebrities for not speaking about the farmers’ protest against Centre’s farm laws.
Earlier, the state Congress chief Nana Patole had said if actors Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar do not take a stand on the issue of fuel price hike, screening of their films and shootings will be stopped in the state.
Patole gave this statement while speaking at a bullock cart-cum-tractor rally in Bhandara to support the farmers’ agitation and their four-hour-long all-India rail-roko stir. The Maharashtra Congress Chief further said that those who don’t speak up for people who buy tickets to watch them, their movies won’t be watched in Maharashtra nor will shooting take place. This isn’t a threat. It’s about democracy and you are public idols and hold accountability, he said and questioned whether they were under the central government’s pressure.
However, the opposition BJP criticised the former speaker and said that the statement is indicative of the crippled and hollowed out the mentality of the Congress party. The Opposition leader, Devendra Fadnavis said that it is Nana Patole’s publicity stunt as he has been newly elected as the state Congress president. “He wants to be in news and hence he is targeting actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar to gain publicity. How can anyone stop shooting? There is democracy and law in the country,” Fadnavis said.
The Sena leader also lashed out at both the Bollywood stars in a same manner and said, “Where were these stars when farmers in Delhi were dying in the cold. We all saw what the government did to a peaceful protest. An India-Pakistan border-like situation was created by placing barricades to block the way. Water cannons were used in freezing cold over peaceful protesters and our farmers died. So I want to ask where all these stars were at that time.” The Sena leader also accused the BJP of twisting facts and dubbed these actors as bias.
